It has been a pleasure and a privilege over the last six months to be the first Liberal Democrat Member of the European Parliament for Yorkshire and the Humber.
It has been an interesting and demanding time. We've had delight and disappointment over Euro-funding for certain parts of Yorkshire; we've had pain and pleasure trying to get other countries to import our beef; triumph and tribulation in securing the best possible deal for Britain as a practical and pragmatic partner in the European Union.
Since the election I have spent a lot of time travelling in the constituency and meeting various individuals and organisations. I am grateful for the time and assistance that has been given to me in helping me represent your interests and those of the region in Europe.
As we approach the new millennium we should reflect on the success of the EU in guaranteeing fifty years of peace in Western Europe and increasing prosperity through free movement and free trade. We should look forward to extending prosperity, strengthening stability by enlarging the EU to include more democracies throughout Europe.
Challenging times are ahead; we need, more than ever, to work constructively with our partners in Europe.
