Yorkshire & the Humber's Lib Dem Euro-MP, Diana Wallis, is this week being shadowed by Latvian Member of Parliament Inese Birzniece in Strasbourg.
The European Parliament is this week debating enlargement, and the Liberal Democrat Group have organised a number of events and invited parliamentarians from countries wishing to join the EU to join in.
25 parliamentarians from various applicant states are guests of Diana Wallis and the European Liberal Democrats and will attend a debate this evening involving European Commission President Romano Prodi.
"I am delighted to have a shadow from Latvia," commented Diana Wallis MEP, "especially since Hull has such strong cultural and educational links with the country."
Inese Birzniece is a Member of the Latvian Parliament's 'Latvia's Way' political party, which is a sister party to the Liberal Democrats and is in government in the state. Amongst other things Diana will be discussing Hull's links with Latvia with her, including the possibility of her visiting Hull at some point in the future.
