Hull University Languages - Diana Wallis MEP Calls for Common Sense

November 29, 2000 12:00 AM

Hull-based Euro-MP Diana Wallis has released a letter written to Hull University Vice-Chancellor Dr David Drewry expressing her concern at plans to cut language teaching in the institution.

A previous lecturer at the university herself, Diana Wallis is fearful for the future of language teaching at Hull if the cuts go through the Senate meeting this afternoon.

In her letter to Dr Drewry Diana says:

"Language skills are increasingly recognized by the business community to be an essential part of expanding and enhancing our economic performance. The University aspires to have a prominent business school. This can hardly compete in a European context without offering the appropriate complementary language studies.

… the proposals I have been alerted to seem to be short-sighted in the extreme and do nothing to enhance the University's standing or build upon its past successes in this field. The City of Hull occupies a geographic and strategic position as a gateway to Europe. It is thus unthinkable that the University should be considering ignoring this and turning inland, and away from the rest of Europe, which should be where our students' futures lie."
