North Yorkshire's Liberal Democrat Euro MP Diana Wallis has expressed her hostility at President George W Bush's decision to go ahead with his missile defence system.
The decision announced in a speech yesterday has been met with considerable hostility worldwide, not least from Europe.
"The defence of Washington should not start in Whitby," said Diana Wallis MEP.
"The inclusion of Fylingdales and Menwith Hill in this scheme puts Yorkshire in the frontline of American missile defence.
"As it was commented in The Observer on Sunday if the Americans were to shoot down a missile over Britain, it wouldn't disappear like a blip on a computer game, but shower the country with radioactive debris.
"At the same time Yorkshire will neither have a say in this, nor accrue benefit in terms of protection from the system.
"President Bush is becoming a hazard to Yorkshire and we should have nothing to do with his insane idea."
