"All polls point to British membership of the Euro" - Diana Wallis MEP

The Leader of the UK Liberal Democrats in the European Parliament will tonight call on the Government to hold a referendum on the Euro as soon as possible.
Diana Wallis MEP will be speaking at a meeting of Yorkshire and the Humber in Europe at York University tonight. She will say: "Yesterday, for the first time ever, an opinion poll showed that a majority of British voters back membership of the Euro, as long as the Government supports the move.
"This is just the latest in a series of polls that have shown a ground-swell of opinion shifting towards being positive about our role in Europe and our membership of the Single Currency.
"Closer to home, the Euro Info Centre has conducted research among businesses in the region and has released the results today. 55% of local business leaders think the Euro would be good for British business. Indeed 44% of them are in favour of UK membership, with just 38% against.
"There can be no doubt that with the manufacturing base that we have here in Yorkshire and the Humber, we are in a position to benefit substantially from the increased trading opportunities that membership of the Euro would bring. I believe it, most Yorkshire businesses believe, and now more and more ordinary people are beginning to realise it too.
"The Government needs to bite the bullet and hold a referendum as soon as possible. Let's get Yorkshire into Europe and Britain into the Euro."
