As the Convention on the Future of Europe opens in Brussels today, Diana Wallis MEP, Leader of the UK Liberal Democrats in the European Parliament, calls for more involvement from the citizens of Europe.
Diana Wallis MEP said, "We need more involvement from the citizens of Europe." Speaking on her recent Opinion to the Legal Affairs Committee, Diana Wallis called for the end result of the Convention to be a covenant between Europe's institutions, its Member States and its citizens.
"The covenant would be a summary of rights and duties between the citizens of Europe on one hand and the institutions on the other. It should contain a summary of the European treaties in an accessible, although not patronising, style and, yes, if appropriate elements of a constitution.
"Once agreed, I would propose that it be sent out to every household across the EU in a similar fashion to the Good Friday Agreement in Northern Ireland. In my view this would be an excellent start to re-establishing a connection between the citizens and the institutions."
