At the opening of today's European Parliament plenary session in Strasbourg, Diana Wallis, Leader of the UK Liberal Democrats, was the main speaker if favour a of a motion to adjourn all parliamentary business to its July session on the basis of findings, announced last week, of Legionella in the Parliament's water system.
Speaking from personal experience, having had a legionella atypical type pneumonia last autumn following the reopening of the Parliament after its summer break, the MEP said that it was irresponsible that members, staff and visitors should be asked into the 'sick building' when there was a possible risk to public health.
She pointed out that because MEPs using the building dispersed to their own doctors in all four comers of Europe no real linkage had previously been made between individual cases of illness although since last week's announcement a pattern was emerging.
In the event Parliament voted 168-101 to continue their business partly after reassurances from local authorities has guaranteed safety of MEPs although not staff or visitors!
After the debate Ms Wallis said, "I am clearly disappointed by the decision my colleagues made, but in the event the Strasbourg authorities must take full responsibility for public health."
