Yorkshire Liberal Democrat Euro MP, Diana Wallis, has welcomed today's court judgement in favour of Hoverspeed against UK Customs and their policy of vehicle seizure for unpaid duty.
The MEP, who is her party's spokesperson on the Internal Market Committee said, "Judging by the scale of calls and letters to my office from returning trippers from this region, I know that hundreds of cars have been seized.
"We all knew that customs action was entirely disproportionate to the alleged 'offence' and therefore an illegal misuse of their wide discretionary powers. There have a number of individual decisions in the lower courts against the Government, but this is really important when a major operator takes on the Government successfully. The customs policy is an affront to the EU principle of freedom of movement, to say nothing of the way it makes a nonsense of the EU' s internal market. This aspect is still the subject of EU Commission investigation."
