Speaking after the Government announced its relaxation on Cross-Channel shoppers being allowed to bring more cheap cigarettes into Britain, Yorkshire & the Humber Euro MP, Diana Wallis said, "The Government has been pushed all the way on this by a combination of the European Commission, British courts and campaigners. This is not how it should be. In the meantime large numbers of families have suffered through the loss of their cars which has often had severe consequences on their livelihoods."
Diana Wallis, who has been working with campaigners in the UK, went on to say, "It is clear that that Government turned this policy on like a switch some 18 months ago. It is equally clear that only after enormous public pressure it can be turned off."
"The Government should immediately set up some kind of fast track process to examine the backlog of pending appeals and all past cases to ensure that any appropriate compensation claims are met."
"I understand the government was properly concerned about smuggling but this was never the right approach given the huge number of innocent families and tourists caught up in this clampdown."
