Yorkshire and the Humber Euro MP Diana Wallis will say at a conference today 7 November that she wants the people of the UK to vote in the same way the Irish recently did.
She will say, "At this moment in Europe's development, we should surely be asking why it was, (with the greatest respect to them), that 3 million Irish voters have been able to decide the fate of European Enlargement?
"If the current Convention on the Future of Europe is really about bringing Europe closer to the people then there has to be a greater acknowledgement that all the peoples of Europe may wish to have a more direct involvement."
Today, Thursday, in the European Parliament Diana Wallis MEP will be co-hosting, on a cross party basis, with Finnish Green MEP Heidi Hautala, the launch of 'The European Referendum Challenge Report' This report sets out an analysis and comment on the experience of referendums in Europe - 30 nation-wide referendums on European issues since 1972.
Diana Wallis will say, "There are no less than 12 national referendums taking place next year. It would be good to think that we might add another on the Single Currency, at last giving the people of the UK a voice the European policy of our country and that opportunity for a full public debate which has for so long been avoided.
