Today, Thursday, the European Parliament including British Tories, voted to support an amendment outlawing the sale of chocolate cigarettes and liquorice pipes to children.
Condemning the vote, local Euro MP Diana Wallis, a Liberal Democrat, said 'It is nonsense to take such a heavy-handed approach and to ban confectionery products such as these. This is not the sort of thing the European Parliament should be wasting its time on, it is hypocritical of the Tories to support such measures when they are normally the first to criticise Brussels intervention'.
By contrast UK Liberal Democrat's led by Diana Wallis MEP voted against the intrusive proposal.
Fortunately the vote was a Recommendation only, so Member States are not obliged to take any action.
