Liberal Democrat Euro MP, Diana Wallis, is speaking in Malta as that country is in the grip of a referendum campaign on EU membership.
The Yorkshire and the Humber Euro MP, who has recently published a book about the three non-EU members of Iceland, Norway and Switzerland, said at a conference that "Malta should not follow Norway and Iceland as a model for non-membership. Both Norway and Iceland have to adopt over 90% of EU laws as their own anyway but as members outside the EU they don't get to influence the decision making process. They are policy takers not policy shapers. Despite being very prosperous countries both are finding life tough outside the EU, so imagine what it would like for Malta."
Whilst in Malta Diana Wallis took part in a televised debate with anti-EU activists.
