Tomorrow, Monday, an announcement is expected by John Prescott as to whether or not the people of Yorkshire and the Humber will be given the opportunity to decide for themselves in a referendum if they want an elected regional assembly.
Diana Wallis, Liberal Democrat Euro MP for the region, is "hopeful of a positive announcement by John Prescott."
She said in advance of the announcement, expected at in a Commons statement at 3.30pm, "This could be a tremendous opportunity for people in the region. I hope that Minister has the courage to make the appropriate announcement."
"At the very least it is important that the existing quangos which spend billions of pounds between them are brought under local, democratic control. As importantly a regional assembly would allow for the implementation of a whole range of strategies which could really make a difference to this region."
