Diana Wallis MEP in Wakefield: warns of threat to democracy

Diana Wallis MEP visited Wakefield Friday 22 August. Speaking at a social event for party members and activists in Lupset she said, "there is a real danger that the public's distrust of Tony Blair over the Iraq War, as the Hutton inquiry unravels, translates into a cynicism of politics and politicians in general. This is dangerous for democracy as it leaves a vacuum filled by parties and individuals peddling simplistic and populist answers."
"We have started to see the rise of the far-right in towns and cities in West Yorkshire already. It is vital that Liberal Democrats stand up to this threat by redoubling our campaigning efforts in the community."
