At their Autumn Conference in Wakefield over the weekend Yorkshire and the Humber Liberal Democrats have overwhelmingly agreed to support a Yes vote in next year's referendum on an elected regional assembly.
Euro MP Diana Wallis who has campaigned in favour of an elected regional assembly said, 'I am delighted by the result. Liberal Democrats have been committed for many years to devolution to the English regions. In Yorkshire and the Humber there are huge numbers of unelected and unaccountable quangos spending millions of pounds. This has to change.'
Diana added, 'The proposals set out by the Government are not perfect but Liberal Democrats will nevertheless campaign for a Yes vote in next year's referendum because the alternative is more of the same. Yorkshire deserves better in the future and Liberal Democrats see regional government as a better way of delivering public services.'
