The European Commission's decision this week to seek a ruling by the European Court of Justice on the Council's flouting of the Stability Pact is a high risk strategy but one which could reap high rewards, according to Liberal Democrat Euro MP Diana Wallis.
Commenting after the Commission reached its decision this week, Diana Wallis MEP said:
"The Commission's decision to challenge the legality of the Council's flouting of the Stability Pact is a high risk strategy, but one which is necessary and could reap high rewards. Not taking legal action would mean tacitly accepting the decision of Ministers to forget their responsibilities and throw out the rule book. "
"While clearly Ministers have a margin for political appreciation in such decisions, the procedure by which they lifted the threat of sanctions against France and Germany was highly dubious. Taken together with the proposals to reform the Stability Pact which Commissioner Solbes is working on, a judgement by the European Court of Justice could help to re-establish the credibility of the Stability Pact and the rule of law in our Union."
