The Government has shunned the advice of the independent Electoral Commission on all-postal ballots for the European Parliament elections.
In a written statement from the Department for Constitutional Affairs, the Government announced it would pilot schemes in two regions not recommended by the Electoral Commission - Yorkshire & the Humber and the North West.
Commenting, Diana Wallis Liberal Democrat MEP for Yorkshire and the Humber, said:
"This announcement shows that Labour is prepared to rip up the advice of independent experts when it suits their electoral convenience."
"The all-postal ballots will be a recipe for confusion in Yorkshire and the Humber. It looks to me as if this is a desperate measure to save Labour's skin in the European and local elections."
