Liberal Democrats celebrate as Diana Wallis MEP retains seat

Liberal Democrats in Yorkshire and the Humber were celebrating the return to the European Parliament of their MEP Diana Wallis.
Ms Wallis who first elected in 1999 was returned with an increased share of the vote in the region and finished in third place ahead of UKIP and the other small parties.
Ms. Wallis said of the result: "Although the other two main parties have seen a collapse in their vote we are delighted to improve the position of the Liberal Democrats. This has clearly been a very bad night for the Conservatives and along with the results from the local elections on Thursday shows that the Liberal Democrats can be challengers to Labour in their former heartlands in the region.
"I look forward to serving the people of Yorkshire and the Humber again and continuing to make the argument for our positive and full engagement in the European Union."
The Liberal Democrats polled 15.6% an increase of 1.2% on the elections in 1999. Labour lost 5.1% and the Tories lost 12% share while UKIP and BNP both increased their share of the vote.
