Local Euro MP Diana Wallis has welcomed plans by the EU Commission not to pursue the introduction of a compulsory 'Made in the European Union' label.
Liberal Democrat Diana Wallis said, "There was a lot of resistance to this idea from industry across Yorkshire and the Humber, so I am pleased to see the Commission has taken these views into account as part of their consultation."
"I believe there are more important things that consumers want to see included on labels, such as chemical content and environmental and social conditions under which goods are produced. In particular there should be better labelling of cosmetics in terms of animal testing."
The EC Working Document 'Made in the EU Origin Marking' issued in December 2003 included several options on marking goods to enable greater consumer information.
