In marked contrast to the atmosphere of conflict three weeks ago, President-elect Jose Manuel Barroso can expect a smooth passage to victory when the European Parliament votes tomorrow to confirm the new European Commission, says local Liberal Democrat Euro MP Diana Wallis.
She commented:
"The relationship between the elected Parliament and the appointed Commission has been changed for ever, and Barroso can look forward to a good humoured atmosphere of mostly sweetness and light in the chamber today (Thursday).
"The new Italian Commissioner, Frattini, is first-class and I can't quite understand why he was that country's pick the first time round. Whatever the background, it is time to move on and get down to business for the next five years.".
