Liberal Democrats met in York yesterday, Saturday, to debate the EU Constitutional Treaty which was signed in Rome recently. The meeting is organised by the party's Euro MP in Yorkshire and the Humber, Diana Wallis.
Diana Wallis MEP said in advance of the meeting, "We face a referendum on the EU Constitutional Treaty, possibly as early as next year, but can we really say what the issues are? Some in the Government claim that the treaty is merely a 'tidying up exercise' whilst some on the other side say that it is 'a threat to 1000 years of British sovereignty'. Are either of these views correct or does the truth lie somewhere in between?"
"I am organising a seminar to look at the issues raised in as 'jargon-free way' as possible in discussion with Liberal Democrats and others. What will it mean for Liberal Democrats and the people of Yorkshire and the Humber? Is the real issue about whether we are in or out of the EU? What if the UK votes 'no' in the referendum?"
Other speakers include former Tory Euro MP and now Liberal Democrat activist, John Stevens, former Euro candidate Stewart Arnold and Anna Chester from Britain in Europe.
