Liberal Democrat Euro MP for the region, Diana Wallis, has said that the decision to introduce ID cards should rest with the British people through a referendum.
She said in advance of today's debate in Westminster that "ID cards fundamentally change that relationship between the state and its citizens. Given the Government got itself into trouble last week on a fundamental question of civil rights, it should have the courage to admit it cannot make these decisions alone."
"Traditionally these sorts of constitutional issues, such as regional assemblies and so on, are put to the people in a referendum. Whether to have ID cards should too. In my opinion ID cards have far greater constitutional implications than the introduction of the Euro where we have already been promised a referendum in the future."
"All the major political parties are split on the issue of ID cards which reflects the way the British people feel as a whole. It is vital that we have a proper debate on this issue and that is it not forced through for the wrong reasons which we would live to regret in the future."
