A North Yorkshire woman was amongst a group of women from the Yorkshire and Humber region, and Women's Institute members, who met Lib Dem Euro MP Diana Wallis in Brussels today 18th January. Mrs. Christine Gooding from Stokesley was part of a group of over 30 female petitioners, mainly from the Women's Institute, visiting Brussels for the Petitions Committee hearing of their UK petition on chemicals and health. This petition was submitted in March 2004 with over 78,000 signatures, and a group of the petitioners came to Brussels then to present it in person.
They met Diana Wallis MEP, who is a member of the Petition's Committee, to express their concerns about the use of hazardous chemicals in everyday consumer products from TVs and computers to air fresheners, cleaning products and perfumes.
The group included several people who were blood-tested by WWF in 2003 to test for harmful chemicals in their bodies (including the Chair of the UK Women's Institute), and members of families who were blood-tested across three generations - grandparents, parents and children - in summer 2004.
Diana Wallis MEP said following the meeting with her constituents, "It is terrific that some many people from across the region have got involved in this campaign. This is a very timely petition as the Parliament is considering passing a strong law to control chemicals in the future. The petition will add real weight to the discussions."
