The region's Liberal Democrat Euro MP has welcomed the announcement that Tessa Jowell will travel the regions in advance of the International Olympic Committee's visit to assess London's bid for 2012 this week.
Diana Wallis MEP said, 'this visit is long overdue. Going around Yorkshire as I do there is a lot of goodwill towards the Olympics coming to London in 2012, but people are not clear what the benefits of this are to the whole country. At the moment it is often being sold on the basis of the regeneration of east London. I therefore welcome Tessa Jowell's decision to tour the regions but the Government's promotion needs to be more than a few photocalls with civic leaders."
