Ever dreamt of addressing an audience of nine hundred or so pro Europeans? Zurich University, in the lecture room where Churchill made his famous 1946 'United States of Europe' speech, was the venue on Thursday 29th April for a meeting of the Swiss European Movement gearing up for their two referendums on new bilateral agreements with the EU.
Lib Dem MEP Diana Wallis, who is president of the European Parliament's delegation for relations with Switzerland, Iceland and Norway, had been asked to share a platform with Swiss Foreign Minister Micheline Calmy-Rey. They found themselves addressing a full lecture hall plus two overflow rooms where the event was simultaneously televised!
Diana Wallis was asked to give an EU view of the new agreements by which Switzerland, unlike the UK will sign up to Schengen and also extend full free movement to all the new EU countries.
Diana Wallis said, 'It was a brilliant occasion and our own European Movement could learn a thing or two from their Swiss colleague. Switzerland might not be in the EU but they know how to generate some excitement about it!'
Later this summer Diana Wallis will be publishing a pamphlet with the European Movement in the UK which will clearly set out the disaster of such association agreements with the EU as are entered into by the Swiss, Icelanders and Norwegians but which are continually held up by British euro-sceptics as a viable option for the UK.
Diana Wallis said, 'we have to nail this ludicrous idea and reveal these agreements for the undemocratic disasters that they truly are!'
