Commenting on European Parliament's vote today on lifting former UKIP MEP Ashley Mote's immunity from prosecution, Liberal Democrat legal affairs spokesperson Diana Wallis MEP said:
"This was a strange scenario on two counts, firstly that an MEP who is ardently anti-EU should have sought refuge behind the European Parliament's privilege of immunity, secondly, that the matter should ever have been referred by an English court when any A-level law student could confirm that no such immunity exists under English law."
"This whole bizarre episode could in some respects be seen as an abuse of the privilege of parliamentary immunity, and it certainly comes from a very odd source but then maybe we should expect confused thinking to go hand in hand with anti-EU sentiment."
