Diana Wallis MEP, President of the Parliament's delegation to Switzerland has welcomed the announcement that the EC hopes to open its new office in Bern by the end of the year.
Ms. Wallis, at a meeting in Morat for the annual interparliamentary meeting with colleagues from the Swiss Parliament said:
"We long have been pushing for the European Commission to open an office in Switzerland. After all Switzerland was the EU's 5th most important trading partner in 2003, after the USA, China, Japan and Russia. Regarding exports, Switzerland was the 2nd after the USA in the same period. It is important that there is a real dialogue between the EU and our Swiss neighbours and it has long been my opinion that this is best done with an office in Bern. I am very pleased that the Commission hopes this will happen by the end of the year."
