Local Euro MP, Diana Wallis, has commented on the planned closure of the area's European Information Centre (EIC) at the end of this month.
Ms. Wallis, a Board Member of the EIC in the 1990s, said in Hull:
"It is very disappointing to be told at such short notice of the impending closure. I hope that there is still something that can be done to prevent this. The nearest equivalent centre providing information on trading in Europe is in Bradford."
"It is especially disappointing news at a time when we should be encouraging business in the area to trade with the new EU member states in Central and Eastern Europe. After all we have a long trading tradition of trade from all the Humber ports with the Baltic going back hundreds of years. We should be capitalising on this at the moment by opening up trade with the new member states in that region."
"It is clear that businesses, like people in general, currently want more information about Europe, not less."
Note:
Euro Info Centres are one-stop shops set up to help small and medium sized businesses with on European Directives and Regulations, public sector contract opportunities, business opportunities, funding, research and development initiatives and much more.
The Hull EIC, set up in the 1980s to serve the old Humberside region, has been situated at the University of Hull's Cottingham Road campus since that time.
