Local Lib Dem Euro MP Diana Wallis has spoken to a group of about 60 women at a working lunchtime seminar on the topic of 'What can Europe do for Women Entrepreneurs' as part of Hull's Europe Week.
Joined by Anna Chester of Britain in Europe and Sarah Lambert from the European Commission's office in London, she discussed the opportunities that exist for ambitious women in business or those considering starting their own business.
Diana Wallis MEP said at the event held at the city's Guildhall on Friday:
"The European Union has provided the basic legal framework that provides all women with equal opportunities in the work place, and the EU continues to improve on this, currently consolidating and simplifying all past legislation in this area."
"More importantly, the EU aims to provide a good economic climate for all business activity, but particularly at present there is a lot of emphasis on freeing up Europe's service sector. Women particularly should gain from this as they tend to excel with people skills and are good at things like customer relations."
"Importantly, in a European context, women also have a better record as linguists. All this should be a plus for women entrepreneurs in Europe."
