Diana Wallis MEP, President of the European Parliament's delegation to Norway, has sent a letter of congratulations to the leader of the Liberal Party in Norway, Lars Sponheim, after his party's excellent result in Monday's General Election.
The Norwegian Liberal Party (Venstre) gained 8 seats in its most successful election since 1965.
Diana Wallis MEP, who had spoken in Oslo before the election, said:
"This is a great result for our sister party in Norway especially when you consider they had been a junior partner in Government over the past few years and that the other coalition parties took a real beating.
"The new left-wing Labour-led Government will not mean a fundamental change in Norway's relationship with the EU in the short-term at least but I wonder if this won't change over time. Not least because I think the Norwegian people themselves will want a debate on the country's relationship with the EU."
