Diana Wallis MEP has written to European Commissioner, Nellie Kroes, expressing concern over a possible side-effect of plans to break-up TV football rights.
Internal Market Comittee member, Diana Wallis MEP said:
"Whilst the European Commission is right to attempt to break up the monopoly of Premiership football television rights, what worries some is the impact this would have on the exposure of the 'less glamorous' clubs in the top division."
"As it is, we currently expect to see the so-called glamour clubs more than twice as often as those deemed by the broadcasters as less glamorous."
"New entrants to the broadcast rights would be tempted to underpin their new football packages with even more games involving Chelsea, Arsenal, Man. United and so on, whereas others, especially the newly promoted teams, are ignored even further. This would not be a positive by-product of the break-up of broadcast rights and is an issue I have asked the Commission to consider in their future agreements."
