Diana Wallis MEP has said that the Valencia Land Law case should be a warning to others buying property in the rest of the EU and has called on the European Commission to consider bringing forward proposals to safeguard other purchases.
The Valencian Land Law case has become notorious because it has been used by developers in Spain to 'grab' private land from hundreds of homeowners who have then been forced to pay for part of a new development they don't want.
Pressure groups have staged meetings and demonstrations against the law and horror stories from victims have hit the international press, seriously damaging the image of that part of the Spanish coast. Over 13,000 cases have come to light since campaigning began.
Organisers of the 'Abusos Urbanísticos No' pressure group have taken their case to the Petition Committee in Brussels.
Diana Wallis MEP, a lawyer and a member of the Petitions Committee said:
"There are horrific cases related to the Valencia Land Law case. Although this is an extreme case, nevertheless, this is a real problem for people buying property in other EU countries.
"I have written to the Commission asking that, given this incident and the increased numbers of EU citizens buying properties in member states other than their own, it consider bringing forward proposals to safeguard the interests of citizens when purchasing property in EU countries other than their own."
