Liberal Democrat Euro MP Diana Wallis has met South Yorkshire police as part of a fact-finding visit to discuss human trafficking.
Following on from the recent case when three Albanians were jailed for trafficking in Sheffield. Diana Wallis MEP met South Yorkshire' Deputy Chief Constable, Grahame Maxwell, the Association of Chief Police Officer's lead on human trafficking.
Diana Wallis MEP said:
"I am very concerned about the apparent rise in human trafficking in the region. It seems that a lot of the young women brought into this country are from other EU countries and for this reason it seems to be a clear case of a problem with an EU dimension.
I am looking to see whether there is any possible action or initiative myself and colleagues in the European Parliament, specifically those colleagues from countries where some of the girls are brought from (often Lithuania) can take to help bring an end to this awful modern form of slavery, at least within the EU.
