Local Liberal Democrat Euro MP, spoke at the Languages for Life Conference at Millthorpe School, York on Friday 25th November.
The aim of the event was to raise young people's awareness of the benefits of language learning and also the vocational relevance of languages in today's global economy. Some 180 students between 15-18 attended the event.
Diana Wallis MEP, said:
"This is a great opportunity for students to learn more about the value of languages learning and the opportunities at Higher Education and beyond.
"I learnt Freanch and German which was a tremendous boost to my career as a lawyer and opened up the opportunity becoming a Meber of the European Parlaiment. I hope that I can pass on some of my own positive experiences of learning languages to the students."
Diana Wallis MEP is fluent in French and German and is currently learning Spanish.
She is the President of the Institute of Translation and Interpeting and in September was awarded the first Honorary Fellow of the newly formed Chartered Institute of Linguists.
