Liberal Democrat Euro MP Diana Wallis has said that some sort of compromise on the UK budget rebate and farm spending reform is both inevitable and necessary.
Speaking in Yorkshire today she said:
"After all when the UK budget rebate was first negotiated Britain had had 5 years of Thatcherism and the economy was in a poor shape. We were probably one of the poorest counties in Europe at that time. 21 years on, and by most measures, by contrast we are now probably the richest country in the EU.
"Whilst there is merit in linking the giving up of the rebate to reform of the Common Agricultural Policy a point often overlooked is that every year many thousands of Britons buy property in France because it offers the sort of rural way of life we have all but lost in this country. Ironically the rural scene in France that we appear to be so attracted to has in part been preserved because of the Common Agricultural Policy.
"With all these inter-ministerial meetings, a great deal of posturing takes place but almost always they end in a form of compromise acceptable to most parties even if they would not admit it publicly!"
