Local Euro MP, Diana Wallis, has welcomed the finalisation of plans to introduce a single procedure (known as the European Payment Order) which would help businesses in chasing debts across the EU.
Diana Wallis MEP, Liberal Democrat Spokesperson on the Legal Affairs Committee, said in Strasbourg:
"Currently a British firm would need to hire local legal expertise in whichever country its indebted client is based. We will adopt an EU-wide claims procedure which makes it much harder for defaulters to avoid payment if they live in another member state. It will benefit small businesses in the region who trade across Europe.
"The only sadness is the UK government could have used the opportunity to simplify debt collecting within the UK too - ironically businesses will still need two lawyers in cases between England and Scotland and England and Northern Ireland. This is a real opportunity missed."
The 1st Reading European Payment Order was given overwhelmingly support on 13th December.
