Local Euro MP, Diana Wallis, attended a meeting over the weekend in the world's most northerly settlement. The settlement is the permanently manned research station of Ny-Ålesund on the island of Spitzbergen above the Arctic Circle and close to the North Pole (79 degrees north).
Liberal Democrat MEP, Diana Wallis, who is a dedicated environmental campaigner, used the opportunity to see at first hand the impact of the melting ice cap in the Arctic and to speak at a symposium entitled 'Change in the Arctic - new opportunities and challenges'.
Diana Wallis MEP, who missed her party's Spring Conference in Harrogate in order to the meeting, said:
"The visit emphasises once again the urgency of decision-makers around the world to take climate change seriously as the effects of these changes can be seen most dramatically in the Arctic and this should be a warning to us all.
"Climate change and other environmental effects in the Arctic do not only have severe implications for this vulnerable region, but for the globe as a whole.
"I am convinced of the urgency for further close cooperation between the scientific community and decision makers both in the circumpolar region and the rest of the world on how to address these challenges, as well as the opportunities."
