Members of Pickering's Rotary Club got an inside view of the workings of the European Parliament when they met local Liberal Democrat Euro MP Diana Wallis in Strasbourg this week (Wednesday).
The Rotary Club members, along with some community activists from elsewhere in North Yorkshire, travelled to Strasbourg to talk to Diana Wallis MEP and to hear about her work in Yorkshire and in the European Parliament. They also visited the Parliament's main chamber, the hemicycle, where they were due to hear a speech from President Abbas of Palestine but which had to be cancelled after he cut short his trip to Europe due to events in the West Bank. Instead the group was able to follow the Parliament voting on several issues. Later in the day the group had a boat trip in the town of Strasbourg itself.
Diana Wallis MEP, Liberal Democrat for Yorkshire & the Humber, who spoke at one of the Rotary Club's Luncheon meetings in Pickering last year, said:
"It was great to be able to speak to the group in Strasbourg. I hope it gave them a taste of my life and work in the Parliament."
