Diana Wallis hosts Conference on 'The New Citizens' Initiatives for Europe' in the European Parliament on Thursday 23rd March.
Ahead of the Conference, Diana Wallis MEP, a Board Member of the Institute for Referendums and Initiatives-Europe said:
"The draft Treaty establishing a European Constitution managed to incorporate the basics of modern representative democracy, based on direct and indirect instruments of decision-making. However, the November 1 2006 deadline is approaching and the EU may have no ratified Treaty by the date foreseen.
"During this conference, experts will discuss the main findings of a one-year consultation process facilitated by the Institute for Referendums and Initiatives-Europe on the opportunities for bringing EU citizens into EU policy-making, rather than being limited to the role of spectator. A variety of citizen referendums and initiatives will be discussed. Can bringing direct democracy into the European Union fill the gap between Europe and its' citizens?"
The conference will be attended by representatives of the European Commission, by present and former members of the European Parliament and by Civil Society.
The speakers will include: Heidi HAUTALA (MP/FI), Theo SCHILLER (Chairman Initiative Referendum Institute, Bruno KAUFMANN (President of Initiative Referendum Institute) Jo LEINEN (PES/DE), Gabi ZIMMER (GUE/DE), Otmar KARAS (EPP/AT), Jens-Peter BONDE (EDD/DK), Carlos CARNERO (PES/ES), Bernhard MARFURT (Ambassador/CH), Carsten BERG (Spokesperson/DEMOCRACY INTERNATIONAL), Robert TESH (Coordinator/AEGEE), Stephen BOUCHER (Director/NOTRE EUROPE), and Mr. MEREZ (Direction générale de l'Education et de la Culture).
