.EU DOMAIN NAME FRAUD: LIB DEMS SEEK ANSWERS

August 1, 2006 1:04 PM

.eu domain nameIn response to complaints from people who have applied to register a .eu domain name, Diana Wallis MEP, the Liberal Democrat spokesperson on the European Parliament's Legal Affairs Committee, has started a campaign to reveal the scale of possible fraud and mismanagement by the .eu domain name managing body, EURID.

Diana said:

"It is unacceptable that people are apparently being charged extortionate amounts of money for a .eu domain name that they have a genuine interest in, and which appears to have been bought in advance by companies or individuals on a speculative basis for future sale.

"I have asked the European Commission for a full explanation of how the .eu domain name allocation has been handled. I have asked them to investigate these complaints immediately and report back to the European Parliament.

"If the scale of the abuse is anything like what appears to have taken place, this will represent a major EU scandal and Commissioners will need to be brought to account."

Notes to Editors

EURID was appointed by the European Commission to set up and manage the allocation of .eu domain names through a system of authorised registrars. Applicants must apply to one of the several hundreds of available registrars who then apply on their behalf for the requested name. Complaints have been received from people who have applied either as individuals or for their companies for a .eu domain name only to find out that it already belongs to a company or individual, with no apparent connection to the name, and they are being charged much more than the original price sold by EURID.

Diana Wallis tabled a written European Parliamentary question to the European Commission on 28 June 2006. An answer should be received within six weeks i.e.by Wednesday 9 August.
