Local Liberal Democrat Euro MP, Diana Wallis, visited Ackworth School, Pontefract on Friday 15th September as part of the school's bid to win the national European Youth Parliament contest which is to be held in Durham later in September.
The students aged between 16 and 18 have already won the regional contest and now go forward to represent Yorkshire in the national contest held over 4 days from Thursday 21st September to Sunday 24th September in Durham. As part of their preparation for the event they called in local Liberal Democrat Member of the European Parliament, Diana Wallis, in order to quiz her on a range of topics likely to crop up at the national session.
MEP Diana Wallis said in advance of the visit:
"I am very pleased to help Ackworth School. I know that they prepared thoroughly for the regional contest and clearly that preparation helped them succeed.
"Now I want to help them to win the national contest and so in turn represent the UK in the International Sessions of the European Youth Parliament. That would be an enormous coup for Pontefract and for Yorkshire in general."
Notes:
The European Youth Parliament (EYP) was founded in 1987 Its sole aim is to provide a unique educational experience for young people who are keen to be part of the Europe of tomorrow.
EYP is an educational foundation to build on the potential of young people through the strengthening of skills such as communication, teambuilding, trust, understanding and working with others from very different backgrounds. More information can be found on the International website of EYP www.eypej.org
Each September, all the winning teams from the regions take part in a four-day event. They spend the weekend teambuilding as well as debating the resolutions that they themselves have written. Two teams are then selected to represent the UK at International Sessions of the EYP.
