Commenting on the official acceptance of Bulgaria and Romania to the European Union on 1st January 2006, local Liberal Democrat Euro MP Diana Wallis, said:
"Although few would begrudge Bulgaria and Romania the status of members, now that we have arrived at this position we have to treat them as proper members. That will be the test, especially, in respect of the free movement of their citizens. Is the UK prepared to be as brave as it was with the enlargement of two years ago and acknowledge the economic contribution that workers from these countries can contribute? And indeed are other EU countries going to be brave enough to follow the UK lead?
"For the future there must be a certainty that negotiations with countries like Turkey and Croatia must be exactly that: real negotiations, not just going through the motions to reach a foregone conclusion.
"EU membership is an attractive proposition and a sought after goal. It should not be some sort of freebie to be handed out with cornflake packets."
