Local Euro MP, Diana Wallis, has commented on the decision by the Pakistani authorities to grant Leeds man Mirza Tahir Hussain a two month stay of execution
In this well publicised case of the Leeds man sentenced to death in Pakistan, Diana, who has been working closely with her Lib Dem colleague in the European Parliament, Sajjad Karim MEP, who himself travelled to Pakistan in May in an attempt to save Hussain from the death penalty, said:
"We are grateful that the execution has been put back two months as this gives us longer to seek a pardon. However, this is a man's life we are talking about here and it is both cruel and inhumane to continually set a date for execution and then delay it.
"The President of Pakistan, General Musharraf, has the power under the constitution to grant a pardon to Mirza Tahir Hussain and there is a precedent for him to do so. This is what those of us who are campaigning for Mirza Hussain's release want most of all. We want to get him home to Leeds.
"When General Musharraf came to Brussels recently he heard the shared voice of the European Parliament, led by our President, Josep Fontelles Borrell. He was told that the carrying out of this execution would cast a shadow over Pakistan's reputation within the EU, as it would represent a singular combination of excessive cruelty and profound injustice."
