With the pound closing in on the two dollar mark for the first time in 14 years and more and more British people going on Christmas trips to New York, local Euro MP, Diana Wallis, has called for a rise in the 'stingy' value of gifts that can be brought into the UK from America before duty and VAT is paid.
At the moment UK travellers returning from the United States are limited to £145 worth of gifts other then alcohol, tobacco and perfume. Anything over that then duty and VAT have to be paid.
Local Liberal Democrat Euro MP, Diana Wallis, said:
"I think the £145 limit is pretty stingy really as it is barely the price of just one iPod. I have written to the European Commission urging a change to this limit. It is probably too late for Christmas this year but I sense that the two dollar pound will be with us for some time yet, so it is important to make the change which has actually been promised for some time.
"After all it was two years ago when the issue last came to light when Coleen McLoughlin was stopped by Customs officers at Manchester Airport after failing to declare gifts after a shopping trip to New York. I am urging some movement on this stingy limit."
