Commenting on today's presentation of the European Commission's Energy Package local Lib Dem Euro MP, Diana Wallis, said:
"There is much to welcome in this package. The Commission is clear about the scale of the change required in energy policy, and that energy efficiency is the most significant element.
"I am particularly pleased to see that the Commission recognises that fossil fuels remain an important part of Europe's energy mix. There is a future for the region's coal fired power stations as long they are linked to the capture and storage of CO2.
"These clean coal technologies will hopefully develop commercially to the point where the nuclear option no longer looks viable."
Notes:
In March 2006, Diana Wallis MEP hosted a public meeting in the European Parliament in conjunction with the Norwegian environmental campaign group, Bellona, on the issue of 'Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)'.
