Andrew Duff MEP was elected yesterday to lead the 12-strong Liberal Democrat group in the European Parliament. Diana Wallis MEP, the former leader, resigned her post having been elected the previous day as one of the European Parliament's Vice-Presidents.
Diana said:
"I have known Andrew for many years and there are few people with his breadth of knowledge when it comes to European matters.
"I am sorry to be standing down as Leader but once the position of Vice-President in the European Parliament came up it was difficult to see how I could properly juggle my workload. At the same time, it was clear that there were colleagues from my own group who wanted the opportunity the lead the UK delegation. I am pleased Andrew is willing to commit to leading the delegation over what should be an interesting couple of years until the next European Parliament elections."
