19th March 2007 saw a public hearing in the European Parliament on road traffic accidents organised by the Committee on Legal Affairs.
The hearing heard from, amongst others, personal injury lawyers, insurance specialists, the President of the Institute of Road Traffic law and other experts from across Europe.
Diana Wallis MEP, the Liberal group Spokesperson on Legal Affairs, said:
"Road traffic accidents are amongst the most frequent and unpleasant incidents that people are involved in as a result exercising of their freedom of movement across Europe. We have a real duty to make the processes around claiming compensation as simple as possible as though the accident had happened in their own home country.
"We need to develop insurance and legal mechanisms that do not heap extra worries, concerns and losses onto the trauma of a foreign accident."
"It is important therefore to persuade the European Commission, amongst others, to recognise this as an area which needs attention."
