Julia Gash
Julia Gash is a Liberal Democrat European Parliamentary candidate for Yorkshire and Humber. As the second candidate on the list, she is currently in line to get elected to Brussels in June 2004. Her campaign is to “Bring Europe Home”:
“ I believe the European political process is remote, self serving and shamefully invisible to ordinary people. I want to bring liberal and European issues to the wider public in a way they can understand and through a process they can feel part of,” says Julia Gash.
She is also a high profile Sheffield businesswoman. Her national award-winning lifestyle business, Gash, was established in 1990 and has a worldwide portfolio together with a successful online and local retail presence. In 1997 Princess Anne visited Gash and the following year Julia was invited to Buckingham Palace to an event to celebrate the achievements of young people in Britain.
It is her experience of running an export led fashion business for many years that has led her to become a key national spokesperson on the euro and down the route of politics. She speaks from the front line. Julia is Convenor of Sheffield in Europe and last year established the UK’s first permanent Euro friendly trading area in the Devonshire Quarter, Sheffield.
Together with an increasing, national, media presence for her business, she has also contributed to numerous flagship TV, radio and press features on the euro. In BBC’s Referendum Street in 2001, she was part of the pro-euro team campaigning in a mock televised Euro Referendum and helped to achieve a 23% swing in vote in favour of the euro.
Originally from Nottingham she has lived in Sheffield for 13 years and is a member of Sheffield Hallam constituency.
