Stewart Arnold

As a former university lecturer Stewart Arnold knows just how unfair tuition fees are. "Tuition fees have widened the gap between social classes, worsened the problems of student debt and they haven't raised more money for universities - the government has just cut back on the money it provides in equal measure to the funds raised by the fees."

Stewart Arnold lectured in International Business at the University of Hull until 2001 before joining the European Parliament as a Policy Adviser. He is a specialist in business transition in Central and Eastern Europe and sees EU enlargement as a great opportunity for businesses in Yorkshire and the Humber.

"It is clear to me that companies across the region are already beginning to explore trading opportunities with the enlarged European Union. Whether it is financial services in Poland, construction companies in Estonia or chemicals in Lithuania, there is a significant trade with these countries. Of course, in a way, it is with access through the Humber ports that this region can look to the Baltic and northern Europe for improving commercial possibilities."

He is married and lives in the East Riding.
