Diana Wallis - Liberal Democrat Member of the European Parliament for Yorkshire and the Humber

FLOODS: "What are they going to do about it?"

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Sat 21st Aug 1999

Diana Wallis, Yorkshire and the Humber's Lib Dem Euro-MP, has written today to the Chief Executive of Yorkshire Water, to demand action over flooding in the East Riding.

People in North Ferriby, Melton and Welton were particularly badly affected. Diana Wallis, formerly East Riding councillor for South Hunsley (which includes these villages), was appalled to hear that Brickyard Cottages in North Ferriby had yet again been badly hit. She said:

"This follows on the back of flooding which did severe damage to these properties last October. I wrote to Yorkshire Water asking for action to be taken but nothing has been done.

"It seems that the residents are yet again in the same position, only worse, and face having to redecorate the ground floors of their houses again.

"Interestingly, I hear that one of the residents has a young child and has found herself knee-deep in water, mud and silt."

Diana is demanding a thorough review of the drainage in the area and will be pressing this matter even further when she meets Kevin Bond (Chief Exec of Yorkshire Water) in September, in Strasbourg.
